The dragon's lair

A personal collection of verse

Cecco Angiolieri

Of all I want so very little’s mine
That I believe I couldn’t have much less;
Show me the luckiest man on earth, I guess
His fortune can’t compare with my decline;
If I set off towards the sea, I think
I’d find less water than they use baptising:
So that today I’m sure I must be rising;
There isn’t any lower I could sink.
Yet I’ll not yield to whimpering despair,
But welcome my disasters in the way
That savages rejoice in foulest weather.
For once I heard a learnèd man declare:
To every man at length will dawn a day
That’s worth a hundred others put together.
