The dragon's lair

A personal collection of verse

Cecco Angiolieri

If only I had one last coin to spare,
I’d let you have it for your gown, alright!
Instead I’m forced to imitate the bear,
Who licks his paws to blunt his appetite.
My future isn’t likely to be bright
With shining coins and money bags replete:
Since Fortune treated me with so much spite,
Men point their fingers at me in the street.
What other way is there for me to mend
This wretched life, except to go and choose
A rope to help me to a fitting end,
Contracting all my sorrows to a noose?
A thousand deaths I have already died,
But still I fear the sin of suicide.
