The dragon's lair

A personal collection of verse

Cecco Angiolieri

A man who has no cash and falls in love
Should build a gallows for his own good use;
He dies but once, while loving he would lose
More lives than Satan hurled from heaven above.
It must be for my sins that I, no doubt,
Embody Love, if such a thing there be.
I couldn’t pay the messenger his fee
To challenge one who put my word in doubt.
Then why not hang myself to finish it?
I’m stopped by one small thought that isn’t healthy:
I have a father very old and wealthy
And like to think he’s dying bit by bit;
But he won’t die till all the sea is shore;
God made him tough to punish me the more.
